Are you an aspiring scriptwriter or a business looking to enhance your video content? Crafting compelling scripts is an essential skill to captivate your audience and deliver your message effectively. .

With a wealth of career experience in the industry I've, hopefully, learnt a thing or two about writing through the years. My bread and butter for the last 7 years has been edit producing, which means script writing, so here's a few things I've learnt along the way.

  1. Understand Your Audience: Before putting pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, it's crucial to grasp who your target audience is. Which time slot is your show TXing in? Which sector of the audience is the brand trying to reach? Tailoring your script to resonate with them will instantly engage viewers and keep them invested in your content.

  2. Create a Strong Narrative: A compelling script revolves around a captivating story or brand message. If you're in the edit, make sure you've built in the time to go through any story notes, liaise with the story producer and watch as much of the footage as you can before getting started. (Hard to do on a tight deadline, I know, but the more you can see the better!) This will make sure you are fully across the story and can begin to construct your film and keep your audience hooked.

  3. Incorporate Emotion: Emotions have a powerful impact on how we connect with stories. Heard the word 'journey'?! Of course you have - it's that overused trope we throw about frequently, BUT, it's for a reason. If there is a clear journey for your contributor then viewers will be invested.

  4. Keep it Concise: In the fast-paced world of production, be it broadcast, branded or digital, brevity is key. Craft your script in a concise manner, delivering your message effectively without unnecessary filler.

  5. Collaborate with Professionals: Dont be afraid to ask questions. Ask your editor how best they like to work. Ask the story producer, researchers or other editorial team members for highlights of the shoot. If it's a brand, make sure you're clear on exactly what it is they want from your collaboration.

Crafting compelling scripts is an art form that requires practice, creativity, and a deep understanding of storytelling. Whether you're creating a promotional video, a piece of unscripted TV, a documentary, a youtube series or branded content, following these steps can help you focus and craft scripts that resonate with your audience.

Mastering the art of scriptwriting is a rewarding journey, hopefully these tips have been helpful. I'm always at hand to collaborate. Just reach out to me on ellierennie@gmail.com
